Dos Folkies Mission Statement
Dos Folkies Gallery is committed to supporting the works of self-taught, brut, and outsider artists. Our gallery showcases folks who live on the margins and those who have little or no education in art but have created some very inspired works. We also know there are many gifted artists out there with disabilities who only need a place to display their art so that the rest of the world can discover what a handful already know. These folks deserve to have their works seen. Dos Folkies Gallery will make available the art of well-known self-taught masters and emerging artists as we find them, or they find us. We will have a few surprises and other fun, informative and interesting things on this venture we call, Dos Folkies Gallery. We believe all inspired creation comes from the same wellspring of the heart.
Dos Folkies is two old friends, Jenell DeMatteo and Dave Russell. We both have Midwest and southern roots, but have settled our bones in the Pacific Northwest, on Washington’s, Olympic Peninsula. Dave has a love of all things naïve and brut. He has immersed himself, and likewise his family, into the Contemporary Folk Art of the American Southeast since his visit to Howard Finster’s Paradise Gardens in 2000. Jenell was born in Memphis and grew up in rural Ohio. Her mother was a primitive antiques dealer and taught her the value of raw and honest folk art. Jenell works full time for individuals with developmental disabilities as an advocate. Not much for pretenses she just really admires the work emerging from these artists.
