Wisconsin native Della Wells was born in 1951. She didn't pursue art until she was 42. When Della was in her late 20s a palm reader told her she would be a late bloomer and that she would go out with a bang. She creates colorful collages, pastels, drawings, dolls and quilts. In 2004 she founded the artists advocacy group, ABEA, (African American Artists Beginning to Educate Americans About African Art). Della also curates art exhibitions, and teaches art to children, recovering women, and adults with developmental disabilities. Her artwork is an extension of her commitment to storytelling and folklore. For Della, folklore is a tool used for examining the historical, social, political and economic complexities of modern African American Women. At her 2006 exhibition, "Don't Tell Me I Can't Fly" she presented a folktale with each piece of her art. |
