About the Artist

James (Buddy) Snipes is another lifelong resident of rural Alabama. With little formal education, Buddy supported himself over the years as a dishwasher, handyman, farmhand and logger. Buddy lives close to his friends, John Henry Toney and Butch Anthony, in eastern Alabama around Seale and Pittsview. His works include painted assemblages made of wood, roots, tin and sticks. He has created a cast of rural and fantasy characters over the years that delight the eyes and tickle the imagination. Plus they look darn good hanging on the wall or adoring a counter. Names like ‘Peanut Family’, ‘Mr. Buger’, ‘Mermaid Fish’, ‘Baboon Mermaid’, and ‘Snuff Dippers’ are some of the amusing titles that he has attached to his creations. You might also catch him in Pittsview hanging out with John Henry and Butch Anthony at The Mayors Office.
